4 Tips For Staying Focused On Your Recovery

Recovery is a practice as much as it is a lifestyle choice. Working toward your recovery every day is like accomplishing a goal between midnight and midnight. Here are a few ways to focus on your recovery every 24 hours.

Stay Focused On The Present: There’s good science behind why recovery emphasizes taking things one day at a time. You can’t go back and change the past. You can’t go forward and determine the future. When you spend your time trying to do those things, you waste another precious moment of the present. Use mindfulness based tools, meditation, and gratitude to keep you grounded in the present moment and focused on what matters most: staying sober, right now.

Don’t Be Afraid To Be Afraid: Secrets are like poison in recovery. Mistakenly, many come to believe that recovery offers them the opportunity to achieve the perfection they couldn’t during their drinking and using. Recovery isn’t about achieving perfection. Recovery is about progressing a little bit each day, which means you’re not going to be doing it perfectly. It’s perfectly normal to have fears, insecurities, cravings, and disturbing thoughts. The best thing you can do is embrace your fears as part of the process and voice them to someone before they build up in your head. Relapse is a process that starts with the way you think, not when you pick up a drink or a drug.

Create An Emergency Tool Kit: Moments of crisis will come. Overtime, they will lessen in their intensity and happen less frequently. During those moments of struggle it is critical to have an emergency tool kit in your back pocket. Have a list of people you know you can trust to call on a whim when you need to talk. Carry around small activities you can use to calm your anxiety, like silly putty, a coloring book, or headphones to listen to music.

Stop Worrying About What Others Think: Being sober is pretty awesome. Deciding to commit to recovery means that you were able to make a bold and courageous decision in your life to start living a different way. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of shame and stigma which comes with labels like “drug addict” “alcoholic” and “mental illness”. Own your recovery instead of letting what others might think own you. This is your journey and you’re doing a great job.
